Viktor Emil Frankl
Viennese neurologist, psychiatrist and philosopher (1905-1997), founder of logotherapy and existential analysis - the so-called Third Viennese School of Psychotherapy. Survivor of four concentration camps and author of “Man's Search for Meaning”.
Logotherapy
A school of psychotherapy founded by Viktor Frankl, centred on the search for meaning in life. The name comes from the Greek “logos” - here: meaning.
Will to meaning
According to Frankl, the primary and basic human motivation - the striving to find and fulfil meaning.
Existential vacuum
A feeling of inner emptiness, boredom and meaninglessness - according to Frankl, a mass phenomenon of our times.
Paradoxical intention
A technique in which the patient deliberately “wishes for” or intends to do exactly what they fear - preferably with humour. It breaks the vicious circle of anticipatory anxiety.
PIL test (Purpose in Life)
The best-known questionnaire measuring the sense of meaning in life, developed by James Crumbaugh and Leonard Maholick (1964) on the basis of Frankl's ideas.
