Creative values

The first path to meaning: realising meaning through what we create and do - work, a creation, a deed for others.

Definition

We realise creative values when we give something to the world: do work, create something, take action, help someone.

It is not about size

Frankl stressed that the meaning of work is decided not by its type or prestige but by how we do it - whether we bring into it what is uniquely ours. What matters is not how large the radius of our activity is, but whether we fill our own circle.

A trap

When a person identifies meaning exclusively with work, they risk emptiness after losing it - for example in unemployment or retirement (Frankl described the so-called unemployment neurosis). It is then important to remember the other two paths: experiential and attitudinal.
